When BJ Papa would play around town, he would always invite young musicians to come and sit in allowing them to develop their jazz improvisation skills. I was one of those young musicians that learned how to play jazz alongside BJ Papa and for that, I will be forever grateful. BJ was a gentleman, a mentor, and a true friend. I will always remember him fondly. Thank you BJ for being part of my life and for helping me become the musician I am today.October 10, 2:38 AM

Maxwell Chandler says:
To anyone who knew him, his friendship was a gift which he never tired of giving. The city will now seem a little emptier. Rest easy pal.

A Gathering for BJ Papa
A memorial celebration of B.J. Papa's life and accomplishments was held at Mojitos on Sunday September 28th, 2008 from 2 PM - 9 PM. Musical performances included, amongst many others, the BJ Papa Band, Bishop Norman Williams, Henry Hung, David Ewell, Kennny Washington, Attila Medveczky, Sameer Gupta, Kim Nalley, and many other friends. Special thanks to so many others who made this be so wonderful.
Every person that loved him was another reason he lived "longer than I ever thought I would live" as he used to say.
